MOVIE REVIEW 6.28.22

Urban Cowboy was on the tube last night. What a relic.

My reaction 42 years later:

  1. I am not feeling John in a beard.
  2. Now that I am aware that I’m a gay, Sissy is my type. Giddy up.
  3. On the other hand, I wanna be Pam. Her Texas chic couture is EVERYTHING.
  4. Watching this again reminds that I am now middle aged. Pam, whatcha doing with Buford? I can’t imagine Daddy Oilbucks would approve.
  5. Wes is what nightmares are made of. Yikes. The worm swallowing was the least egregious of his antics. Good god, Sissy, what were you thinking?
  6. The urban cowboy soundtrack is unbelievably fantastic. It is the best thing about the movie, imo. Wowsa. It brought me back to the visceral gut punch of being in junior high with being on stage my only refuge. And seeing the Charlie Daniels band live? Amazing. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrpyDacBCh7CJv_L0VxzWBhcXZzncW1aU
  7. I am not sure how women dealt with these oppressive gender roles back in the day. This movie works out in the end for the characters but it is sure sobering to view these dark times.
  8. John waking up in a mirrored boudoir with 2 women was disco era cinema gold.
  9. I love John’s pal Cooper Huckabee. He has a kind face.
  10. Bud’s aunt and uncle are as cool as you get: non judgemental, good advice, get you a solid gig…..
  11. I am never not enamoured by John’s dancing. He is captivating to watch.

ARMRESTRATING: 2 mini Sissy and Bud license plates up for a classic and semi cheesy flick.

Ozark #62022

By gosh, by golly, I did it. I succumbed. No regrets. I. Am. Loving. Ozark. Since I’m late to the party, perhaps this question has been answered. I am wondering if Ozark tourism has increased since the advent of this show.

“If I want to put all $7,945,400 into a hot tub, get buck naked and play scrooge mcDuck, that is 100% my business.” -Marty Byrde

“Money is not peace of mind. Money is not happiness. Money is, at its essence, that measure of a man’s choices.” -Marty Byrde

“This is our life now. I can stay here. I can talk about our feelings. Or I can go take care of stuff and make sure that we don’t die, okay?” -Marty Byrde

“The satisfying sound of your lover smacking the pavement is the only thing that gets me to sleep.” -Marty Byrde

Gaslit #2022

Trailer: https://youtu.be/ZQ-uyTbsWJw

On Martha Mitchell: “Her husband basically told everyone that she was mentally unwell and an alcoholic and not to put too much stock in her. She was one of the first voices to try to warn the country about the corruption at the centre of the Nixon administration and was really laughed at.”

Gerald R Ford: The political lesson of Watergate is this: Never again must America allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to by-pass the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election.

ARMRESTRATING: I am starting my review with an armrest rating. I know, it’s an “Armrest-gate“ scandal. I declare that this series earns a Martha approved, bouffant worthy, coveted 2 armrests up rating.

Go now, do not pass go, do not collect 200. Climb into your time machine and go back in time 50 years. Watch Gaslit.

Visit the 1970s political climate of deceit, perjury, and political corruption through command performances, quick wit, artistic filming, clever writing, and exquisite costumes/makeup.

Malignant mastermind, G. Gordon Liddy himself, told Dave Letterman that Watergate will not be remembered.

He was wrong. Martha was right.

My reactions:

1. All of the acting is top notch. The characters are well written. It was fun to play “find Sean Penn.” Julia made me forget Julia.

2. G. Gordon Liddy is completely nuts. It was uncomfortable to watch his psychosis. I am amazed that he became a popular public figure following his incarceration.

3. Thank you musical soundtrack creators. Your musical choices were inspiring. https://soundtracki.com/shows/gaslit-season-1-soundtrack

4. I admire the nuance of character displayed. It can be an easy grab to generalize about people and write them off. People are complicated.

5. That being said, imo there are some clear villains in the story. The final fight between Martha and John Mitchell was riveting.

6. If all you take away from the 8 episodes is watergate heroes Frank Wills and Martha Mitchell, you are better for it. It gives me renewed respect for people who speak the truth despite consequences.

7. Don’t be surprised if this series sends you on a deep dive of this story. I am currently looking for the interview between Barbara Walters and Martha Mitchell.
